How to Get a Canada Visa? 2026 Visitor Visa (TRV) Guide

For most people, the idea of going to Canada is a combination of several different dreams. Some want to see the skyscrapers of Toronto, some the nature of Vancouver, some the streets of Montreal. For others, being reunited after years with a relative living in Canada is the whole trip itself.

Then the romantic part of the trip ends and the real question emerges: "How do we get the Canada visa?"

A Canadian visitor visa is a process that must be prepared carefully in applications made from Türkiye. What's more, because an important part of the application proceeds online, there is no classic system where you go into a long interview at a consulate and describe yourself.

This sometimes makes the process seem easy. But on the contrary, the information you provide on the application form, your financial situation, your purpose of travel, your connections in Canada and the elements showing that your life in Türkiye continues are all of great importance.

In its visitor visa assessment, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) particularly needs to be satisfied that the applicant will leave Canada at the end of the visit, that they have enough money, and that they are admissible to Canada.

In other words, the basic question of a Canada visa is actually quite simple: "Why is this person going to Canada, and why will they return after the visit is over?"

In this article, we will look step by step at how a Canadian tourist visa is obtained, which documents can be prepared, how the bank account is assessed, whether an invitation is really required, the biometrics process, fees, what happens after the application, and the most common mistakes.

What Is a Canadian Tourist Visa?

The document applied for by people wishing to go to Canada for a short tourist or visit purpose is the Visitor Visa. By its official name, this document is also referred to as the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).

Nationals of visa-required countries who wish to make a tourist trip to Canada, visit family or friends, or benefit from activities permitted in visitor status must obtain the appropriate visa before travelling.

Turkish citizens also need a visitor visa when travelling to Canada for a visit. On Canada's current country list, Türkiye is among the countries requiring a visitor visa.

The basic point here is this: a Canada visa is not an immigration visa. If you are going as a visitor, your purpose must be a temporary visit. Working in Canada, undertaking long-term study or settling permanently are matters of different immigration and temporary residence categories.

Is It Difficult to Get a Canada Visa?

We find both the sentence "a Canada visa is very hard" and the sentence "if you submit the documents it will definitely come through" too bold. Because in a Canadian visitor visa, applications are assessed according to the person's own circumstances.

A company owner's file and a student's file will not be the same. The financial structure of an employee on a regular salary differs from that of a self-employed person. The travel purpose of a person whose sibling lives in Canada is also not the same as that of a tourist who only wants to see Toronto.

Therefore, there is no single prescription that applies to everyone in a Canada visa. Instead, the applicant's real situation must be set out accurately.

How Is a Canada Visa Application Made?

Most Canadian visitor visa applications are made online. The general process begins with checking whether a visa is needed to enter Canada, eligibility conditions are assessed, the application is started through an online application account, the necessary form and information are completed, supporting documents are prepared and uploaded to the system, the application fee and, if required, the biometrics fee are paid, the application is submitted, if biometrics are required a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) is received, fingerprints and a photograph are completed at an authorised centre, IRCC assesses the application, additional documents are requested if deemed necessary, a decision is made, and in the case of approval the instructions for sending the passport for visa processing are followed.

IRCC states that most visitor visa applications must be made online. Paper applications are permitted only in certain situations.

The First Step in a Canada Visa Application: Determining the Purpose of Travel

Before starting the application, there is actually a task more important than the form: why are you going to Canada? A tourist trip? A family visit? A friend visit? Another short-term visit?

The answer to this question affects the rest of the application. For example, the travel plan of a person who only wants to see Toronto and Niagara Falls will not be the same as that of a person visiting their sibling living in Vancouver. Both can apply for a visitor visa. But their files should not be prepared the same way.

Why Is the "Why Are You Going?" Question So Important for a Canada Visa?

Because the purpose of travel is the point at which the other parts of the application connect to one another.

Suppose you are planning an 8-day trip to Toronto. Your hotel is in Toronto, your flight dates are set, your leave document covers 8 days, your bank activity is regular, your travel budget is reasonable. In this case, the documents tell the same story.

In another scenario, you say an 8-day tourist trip but you do not mention a relative living in Canada, your accommodation information is different, your financial activity is unexplained, and there is other information on the application form. The parts of the file come apart.

In a Canada visa, the problem sometimes emerges not in a single document but in the picture the documents create together.

One of the Most Important Matters in a Canada Visa: Intention to Return

This is one of the fundamental points of a Canadian visitor visa application. IRCC wants to be satisfied that a person applying for a visitor visa will leave the country at the end of their visit to Canada. In addition, the applicant having sufficient financial means for the period they can stay in Canada is among the assessment criteria.

For this reason, saying only "I want to go to Canada" is not enough in the application. The next question naturally comes: "So why will you return?"

Your ongoing job in Türkiye, your education, your company, your family arrangement, the assets you own or your other personal and economic ties can be important in this assessment. The aim here is not to artificially produce "ties," but to show your existing life accurately.

How Much Money Should Be in the Bank Account for a Canada Visa?

Here is the internet's favourite question. "How much money should be in the account for a Canada visa?" If you are looking for a clear figure, bad news: there is no single figure that applies to everyone.

IRCC states that a visitor must have enough money according to factors such as the length of their stay in Canada and whether they will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.

For this reason, it is not correct to think that a 5-day Toronto trip and a 25-day Canada tour have the same financial requirements. Do you have accommodation costs? How much is your flight cost? What is your daily spending budget? Are you covering the trip yourself, or is someone else covering it? All these questions matter.

Is Only the Balance Important for a Canada Visa?

No. Having 300,000 TL in the bank account may look nice at first glance. But consider that this money was deposited into the account a few days before the application.

Another person has 100,000 TL in their account, but regular salary deposits have been coming in for months, and the short trip the person is planning is consistent with this level of income.

Here, looking only at the question "who is richer?" is not enough. The source, order and relationship of the financial situation to the travel plan become important. For this reason, depositing a large sum just for the visa right before the application does not automatically create a strong financial file. It may even produce a movement that requires explanation.

How Much Should the Salary Be for a Canada Visa?

There is no single answer to this either. A Canadian visitor visa application does not work on a specific salary threshold. What matters is that your monthly income is consistent with your travel plan.

For example, a 5-day economical trip by a person earning 60,000 TL a month and a 30-day expensive trip by a person earning 250,000 TL a month are not assessed the same way. That is why it is not correct to think "my salary is low, definite refusal" or "my salary is high, definite approval." The financial situation is assessed within the file as a whole.

Which Documents Are Required for a Canada Visa?

Although it varies according to the applicant's situation, different documents can be used in a Canadian visitor visa file. On IRCC's current application page, a digital copy of a valid passport or travel document is among the basic documents. Depending on the applicant's situation, employment, financial, travel plan and other supporting documents may also be requested.

In general, we can consider the file under these headings.

Passport. The pages of your valid passport showing your identity and travel information are used in the application. Visas and travel records in your previous passports can also be meaningful for demonstrating your travel history.

Financial Documents. Bank statements, income documents and other documents showing your financial capacity to afford the trip can be used.

Employment Documents. For employees, an employer letter, salary information, leave status and documents showing the length of employment can be submitted according to the nature of the file.

Company Documents. For company owners, documents showing the business's activity and the person's position in the company can be used.

Student Documents. For students, documents showing education status can help demonstrate that existing life in Türkiye continues.

Travel Plan. Which cities you will visit in Canada, how many days you will stay and the general purpose of the trip can be explained.

Accommodation Information. Information consistent with the travel plan, such as staying in a hotel or with family or friends, can be provided.

Invitation Letter. If a family or friend visit is involved, documents about the inviting person and, depending on the nature of the visit, an invitation letter can be used.

IRCC states that the documents that can be added to an application vary according to the applicant's situation, and that documents such as an employer letter or an invitation letter from a business in Canada can be used in certain situations.

Is an Invitation Required for a Canada Visa?

No. The idea that a person wishing to go to Canada for tourism must necessarily bring an invitation from Canada is not correct. A tourist wishing to see Toronto is not required to obtain an invitation letter from a relative living in Canada.

However, if you are going to stay with a relative living in Canada, or if the main purpose of your trip is to visit someone, this connection must be explained correctly in the application.

Here we come to the same point again: an invitation does not turn a trip that is not genuine into a genuine one. If your trip is genuinely touristic, it should be described as a tourist trip. If it is genuinely a family visit, it should be explained as a family visit.

How Should the Travel Plan Be Prepared for a Canada Visa?

In a large country like Canada, some realism is needed when preparing a travel plan. A person leaving Türkiye trying to see Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Niagara all at once on an 8-day trip may sound exciting. But in the file it may look a little strange.

For example, a realistic plan such as arrival in Toronto on the first day, a Toronto city tour on the second, Niagara Falls on the third, Toronto on the fourth, preparation for departure on the fifth, free time on the sixth, shopping and a city tour on the seventh, and return to Türkiye on the eighth, may be more meaningful in terms of feasibility.

Here the aim is not to plan every hour, but to show the logic of your trip.

Is It Necessary to Buy a Flight Ticket for a Canada Visa?

Buying a non-refundable flight ticket before receiving the visa result is not required. Stating your travel plan in the application is one thing; buying definite travel before the visa comes through is another.

Especially making high-cost, non-refundable bookings before the visa result is finalised can create unnecessary financial risk. For this reason, it may be healthier to prepare your travel plan realistically but make definite purchasing decisions taking the visa process into account.

Is Travel History Important for a Canada Visa?

Travel history can be meaningful in assessing the application. The passport history of a person who has previously travelled to the US, the UK, Schengen countries or other countries, and who complied with the visa rules in those countries, can provide context for the file.

But there is an important distinction here too: there is no rule that a person with no travel history cannot get a Canada visa. The application of a person going abroad for the first time is also assessed on its own merits. Therefore, an empty passport is not, on its own, grounds for refusal.

If You Are Applying for a Canada Visa for the First Time

A first application usually makes people think more than necessary. "I haven't been to Canada before." "I don't have a UK visa." "My passport is very empty." None of these determines the fate of the application on its own.

What matters on a first application is setting out your existing life accurately. If you work, your job; if you are a student, your education; if you are a company owner, your company; if you live with your family, your family arrangement; if your family is covering the trip, this support.

In other words, you cannot create a travel history you did not have in the past. But you can describe the life you have today accurately.

What Should Employees Pay Attention to When Applying for a Canada Visa?

For a person in regular employment, working life is an important part of their existing arrangement in Türkiye. Documents such as an employer letter, length of employment, job description, salary information and leave dates can explain the applicant's employment situation.

For example, if you have worked at the same company for three years, receive a regular salary, have taken leave for an 8-day Canada trip and need to return to work after the trip, this picture can include elements showing that the person's life in Türkiye continues.

Of course, no document is a visa guarantee on its own. But it supports the overall story of the file.

Canada Visa for Company Owners

In the applications of company owners, documents that can show the business's real activity and the applicant's position in the company can become important. Here too, the aim is not to fill the file with company paperwork, but to show that the company is genuinely active and part of the person's economic life in Türkiye.

For example, an owner of a business may need to return to their company in Türkiye after a short Canada trip. This is a real tie in the applicant's existing life. What needs to be done is to describe this tie with the right documents.

Can Students Get a Canada Visa?

Yes. Being a student is not an obstacle to applying for a visitor visa. However, how the student's travel expenses will be covered can become important. If the family provides support, this can be shown clearly.

The student's ongoing education is also an important part of their life in Türkiye. For this reason, the consistency of the student certificate, travel dates and academic calendar can make the application more understandable.

What Is Biometrics in a Canada Visa?

One of the important stages of the Canada visa process is biometrics. Biometrics means the taking of fingerprints and a photograph.

According to IRCC, biometrics are required in most visitor visa applications. Applicants between the ages of 14 and 79 mostly need to provide biometrics, and as long as the biometrics provided are valid, they generally need to be provided again once every 10 years.

The process is generally as follows: the application is made, the fees are paid, the Biometric Instruction Letter is received, a biometrics appointment is made, and fingerprints and a photograph are provided. IRCC wants biometrics to be provided as quickly as possible after the biometric instruction letter is received, and generally to be completed within the time frame stated in the letter.

How Much Is the Canada Visa Biometrics Fee?

As of 2026, the biometrics fee is 85 Canadian dollars per person. For eligible families applying at the same time, the total cap for the biometrics fee is 170 Canadian dollars.

The application processing fee for the visitor visa is 100 Canadian dollars per person. Therefore, for a single applicant who needs biometrics, the total of the basic fees comes to 185 CAD.

These figures may not include application centre services or other costs that may arise depending on your situation.

How Long Does a Canada Visa Take?

It is not correct to give a single number here. IRCC clearly states that processing times vary according to the country and the situation of the application. It also states that the processing time may not include the time needed to provide biometrics.

Factors that can affect the time include whether the application is complete, the ease of verifying the information, requests for additional documents, application volume, requests the applicant needs to respond to, and other administrative checks.

For this reason, it would not be correct to make a definite promise such as "a Canada visa comes through in exactly X days." When planning an application, IRCC's current processing-time tool should be checked.

Canada Visa Fee 2026

As of 2026, the Canadian visitor visa processing fee is 100 CAD per person, and biometrics is 85 CAD per person.

In visitor visa applications made by eligible families of 5 or more people at the same time and place, the family cap for the visitor visa fee is 500 CAD. For biometrics, the total cap for eligible families is 170 CAD.

It should also not be forgotten that fees are charged regardless of the application result and are generally not refunded if a visa is not granted.

Is There an Interview for a Canada Visa?

In a Canadian visitor visa application, there is no routine in-person interview for everyone as in the US B1/B2 process. An important part of the application is made online.

However, IRCC may request additional information, documents or an interview from the applicant where necessary. Therefore, the thought "there's no interview, so how I fill in the application form doesn't matter" is completely wrong. On the contrary. The interview not being routine does not reduce the importance of the information you provide on the application form.

Is Knowing English Required for a Canada Visa?

No. You do not need to have a specific level of spoken English to apply for a Canadian tourist visa. An important part of the application proceeds through the online form and documents anyway.

However, being able to communicate while travelling in Canada is of course a separate matter. The basic assessment of the visa application is not made through an English exam.

Why Are Canada Visas Refused?

A refusal decision in Canadian visitor visa applications can have different reasons. But some basic issues come up frequently.

The purpose of travel not being sufficiently clear: if it is not clear why you are going to Canada, the overall assessment of the file can become difficult.

The financial situation being inconsistent with the trip: the planned trip may be very expensive while the financial situation does not support it.

Return ties not being sufficiently explained: not setting out your job, education or other ties in Türkiye adequately in the file can create a problem.

Bank activity being unexplained: especially unusually high deposits may require explanation.

Contradiction between the form and documents: the information on the application form differing from the documents can lead to a trust problem.

Connections in Canada being explained incorrectly or incompletely: if there is a relative or friend, the situation must be set out correctly.

The applicant's eligibility for visitor status not being sufficiently shown: there must be sufficient conviction that the person is going to Canada for a temporary purpose and will leave at the end of the visit.

In IRCC's own statements, demonstrating that the visitor will return to their country, has sufficient financial means and is admissible to Canada as a visitor is among the basic requirements.

Depositing Money at the Last Minute for a Canada Visa

This subject needs to be addressed under a separate heading. Because the thought "I need to put money in the bank for a Canada visa" can misdirect many applicants.

Having money in the bank account can of course be important. But how did the money come into the account? Do you have a regular income? What is your travel budget? Who is covering the trip? Does this money really belong to you? All of these are more meaningful questions.

Rather than inflating the account before the application, it is far healthier to show your existing financial arrangement accurately.

Is a Cover Letter Required for a Canada Visa?

It is not mandatory to write a long letter for every application. However, if there is a special situation that needs explaining in the application, a Letter of Explanation or a similar explanation can help make the file understandable.

For example, if you have recently changed jobs, if there is an unusual change in your income, if you need to explain a large bank movement, if your family is financing the trip, if you are visiting a relative in Canada, if you have previously been refused a visa, or if your travel plan differs from a standard tourist trip, a short, logical explanation can be prepared.

IRCC's current application system also has a "Letter of Explanation" field for some additional explanations. Here the aim is not to write a story, but to remove the question.

The Most Common Mistakes in Canada Visa Applications

Preparing the same file for everyone: the applications of a student, an employee, a company owner and a retiree are not the same.

Depositing money at the last minute: rather than artificially changing the financial picture, it is better to explain the existing situation.

Creating an unnecessary pile of documents: many documents do not automatically mean a strong application.

Hiding relatives in Canada: rather than concealing a genuine connection, it must be explained clearly.

Exaggerating the travel plan: rather than trying to fit all of Canada into an 8-day trip, it is more meaningful to prepare a realistic plan.

Filling in the application form in a hurry: the online form is one of the basic parts of the application.

Assessing the financial situation only in terms of the balance: as much as the money in the account, its source and order matter.

Not explaining employment or education status sufficiently: it is important that your existing life in Türkiye is understandable.

Thinking of a Canada visa as an immigration application: a visitor visa is for a temporary visit.

Believing there are people who can guarantee the visa: no consultant or agent can guarantee the visa decision.

What Should a Strong File Look Like for a Canada Visa?

It is not possible to explain this with a single formula. But a good file should be able to answer three basic questions when opened.

Why are you going to Canada? Is your purpose of travel clear? Can you afford this trip? Is your financial situation consistent with your plan? Why will you return to Türkiye when your visit is over? Are your job, education, company or other ties in Türkiye understandable?

All the documents gain meaning around these three questions. For this reason, when preparing a Canada visa application, you need to look at the file as a whole before the number of documents.

Once You Get a Canada Visa, How Long Can You Stay in Canada?

There is an important distinction here too. Having a Canadian visitor visa in your passport does not mean you will automatically stay for a specific period on each entry.

On entry to Canada, the border officer can make an assessment about your visit and determine your length of stay. Although visitors can generally be granted a stay of up to 6 months, the conditions of each entry can be different.

Therefore, being able to enter Canada with a long-valid visitor visa does not mean a right to live in Canada permanently. The logic of a visitor visa is a temporary visit.

How Many Years Is a Canada Visa Granted For?

There is an important detail regarding Canadian visitor visas: the visa's validity period can vary according to the applicant. It is not correct to act on a single rule of "everyone is granted a 10-year Canada visa."

The validity of a Canada visa can be related to factors such as the passport's validity period, the application conditions and the visa officer's assessment. For this reason, rather than accepting the sentence "Canada grants 10-year visas" as correct on its own, it is more accurate to think "a long-term visitor visa can be granted."

Is It Necessary to Get Advice for a Canada Visa?

This depends entirely on the applicant's situation. A standard, simple application can be made by the person on their own.

However, if the file involves elements such as a first application, complex financial movements, company ownership, sponsored travel, a family connection in Canada, a previous visa refusal or a long and complex travel history, having the application professionally assessed can be useful.

The aim here is not to promise the applicant a "definite visa." The aim is to prepare the right application.

The Bright Visa Approach to Canada Visas

In a Canada visa, our first step is not to send a document list. First, to understand the person.

Why are they going to Canada? How many days will they stay? Where will they stay? Who is covering the travel expenses? What work do they do in Türkiye? What is their income? Which countries have they travelled to before? Do they have acquaintances or relatives in Canada?

A file prepared without the applicant's real situation emerging may be technically complete. But it may not be a well-described file.

At Bright Visa, our approach begins here too. Rather than giving every applicant the same text, the same letter and the same document order, we care about the file being created according to the person's own circumstances. Because in a Canada visa too, everyone's story is different.

The file of a tourist going to Toronto for the first time is one thing. The file of a person visiting their sibling in Vancouver is another. The file of a student spending a few days in Montreal and returning is another. The file of a businessperson leaving their active company for a short Canada trip is another. The same visa type, different applications.

Conclusion: A Canada Visa Is Not Just About Money

There are far too many definite sentences online about a Canada visa. "You must have this much money in your account." "You definitely need an invitation." "You can't get a Canada visa with an empty passport." "Canada grants everyone a 10-year visa." "If you have this country's visa, Canada will definitely grant one too."

Most of these sentences try to reduce the real application process to a single rule. But a Canadian visitor visa application is a more personal process than that. In IRCC's assessment, elements such as the applicant's purpose of travel, financial capacity, intention to leave at the end of their visit to Canada and ties in their own country are important.

For this reason, a good Canada visa file is not the file with the highest bank balance. It is not the file carrying the most documents. Nor is it the file with the longest letter. A good file is the one that sets out the applicant's real situation most understandably.

If you want to go to Canada, first plan your trip. Then look at how this trip fits with your life. Then support it with documents. Because in visa applications, the matter is often not how much you can tell the other side, but how well what you say supports one another.

A journey to the other end of Canada can perhaps be planned for months. The first coffee in Toronto, the first view in Vancouver, or those few minutes spent across from Niagara may last only a few hours. But the first step of that trip is taken before you even board the plane: with a well-prepared application.
